AUTUMN HARVEST BALL!

It’s now been 20 years since our first Autumn Harvest Ball in 1997, and we are getting ready for another fabulous once-a-year event, the Harvest Ball!  Tickets are now ready to reserve. This is our community’s fun and playful Victorian-era ball, providing a historical evening of classic smooth New England contras, quadrilles, mixers, couple dances and even parlor games from 1790 to about 1920. As with all our dances, all figures will be taught, and everyone is welcome to attend.  If you already contra dance, you’ll have no problem with this dancing.  If you are newer to dancing, most everything will be accessible.

Spread the word about this memorable once a year event!

If you’ve been before, you know how wonderful this event is.
But if you haven't been before, here are some details:

HELPING THE CREATE THE MAGIC OF THE EVENING:

Thanks to the generous contributions of volunteers we get each year, we create an amazing setting in the dance hall for this event. Each person who can offer their time helps create the magic that makes this event what it is.   It's a lot of work but it's also a lot of fun, and anyone who can help with setup ahead of time can get a reduced or free admission.  VERY IMPORTANT: We need to secure two reliable kitchen coordinators *before* November 10th to help coordinate food in the kitchen.

To be volunteer to help with the ball, or for work exchange for reduced or free admission, please contact Bob Peterson at BobP@ContraCorner.com, and he will let you know what's available.   You can sign up to be a volunteer directly on line at:

THE FABULOUS POTLUCK DINNER!

At 5:30pm the night of the ball, join us for an amazing candlelit dinner, made by you! Bring your favorite homemade dishes to share, and join in this delicious feast that is second to none. If you are coming to the dinner, please bring a dinner dish to share (enough for at least 6 people). To help balance the menu, or if you need ideas, please contact us as noted below. Volunteer assistance will be needed ahead of time to help set up dinner tables and the buffet table. Sam Arfer will be helping to coordinate the use of the kitchen for heating items. If you have something that needs heating before eating, please be at the church by 4:30pm to use the oven and stove, as we will be serving dinner promptly at 5:30pm.

WALTZING AFTER DINNER

At 7:00pm, after dinner and before the ball begins, we start the dancing with waltzes. It's a relaxed and lovely way to start the evening. Ask anyone to dance, and join in. If you are new to waltzing, we have plenty of experienced dancers who can help you.

BALL CARDS FOR THE DANCE

Ball cards were a part of Victorian balls, and were used to secure partners for each dance. Our tradition is that we sign off on each other's ball cards after each dance, in an effort to keep dancing friendly and open to all, and to keep as a souvenir of all the lovely dances we shared throughout the evening.

THE MUSIC AND THE MASTERS OF CEREMONIES

This year, the music for this evening is the absolutely delightful, Spare Parts, including: Bill Matthiesen on piano, Liz Stell on flute, and Eric Buddington on fiddle. Chris Ricciotti will be the Harvest Ball MC and I am delighted to announce our guest caller this year is the fabulous, Marcie Van Cleve, the organizing force of the Folk Arts Center of New England!

THE TOTALLY DELICOUS DECADENT DESSERT POTLUCK!

Half way through the ball program, we have an extended break to enjoy a decadent array of delicious homemade desserts, again, made by you! If you are planning to come to both the dinner and desert potluck, we would be delighted if you bring food to both, but if you need to pick one or the other, bring food for dinner; if you are planning on attending the dessert potluck only, bring a dessert. We’ll need volunteers to help set up and then break down the dessert arrangement.

SO WHAT DO I WEAR?

This event is open to everyone, and for this special once-a-year event, we encourage attendees to wear something festive or colorful or formal, or if you have it, period attire (or even Steam Punk!) but we do not have fashion police on the premises. (If you see someone dressed in uniform, it’s only their chosen attire for the evening!) We want everyone to have a good time, and we want you to be comfortable. Dancing will be lively but elegant, with a more relaxed program than our usual contra dance evenings, so if you decide to get gussied up, the style of dances on the program will be comfortable for anyone wearing formal or period attire. Here are some pictures of balls past to use as a guide. If you want to go all out and want some ideas it doesn't have to be expensive, and it can be easy to do. Feel free to contact us for ideas.
