Directions to the First Church of Jamaica Plain, Corner of Centre & Eliot Streets in Jamaica Plain
FROM POINTS NORTH, VIA ROUTE 1, or I-93:
Follow Route 1 south, crossing the Tobin Bridge, onto I-93 South. The next exit is for Storrow Drive, which is on the right side of I-93 at the Fleet Center. Follow signs to Storrow Drive, heading west. Then follow directions under FROM STORROW DRIVE WEST.
FROM POINTS SOUTH, VIA I-93:
Take 93 North to exit 26 to get on Storrow drive West. Sign says "Storrow Drive Cambridge." Then follow directions under FROM STORROW DRIVE WEST
FROM STORROW DRIVE WEST:
Head west on Storrow drive, staying in the middle lane while possible to avoid left exits that spring up without warning. DON'T take Gvt. Center, Copley Square, Back Bay or Mass Ave. 2A. After that last one, when you have time, get in left lane, and DO take LEFT exit for "Kenmore Square, Fenway, Route 1." The exit splits immediately into separate roads for Fenway and for Kenmore; stay to the left for the Fenway exit, which takes you onto a bridge with traffic merging from the right.
After crossing the bridge, bear right onto Boylston Street-West. Sign says "Outbound Riverway." Continue on Boylston Street between 2 gas stations, past a Howard Johnson's opposite McDonalds, and through 3 more blocks to the Star Market on the left. Boylston Street ends there by merging into Brookline Avenue—continue as straight as you can, which feels like a slight turn to the left. Continue straight on for several blocks past Wheelock College and lots of hospitals. You will pass Brigham and Women's Hospital on your left and cross Longwood Avenue and Fenwood Street. At the next light, turn left onto the Jamaicaway, which is also called the Riverway. Follow the Jamaicaway about 2-3 miles, passing the exit for Route 9. First light is Bynner, second light is Perkins. At the third light, turn left onto Pond Street. (Jamaica Pond and the gazebo will be on the right just as you make this turn—though they are hard to see in the dark).
Continue 2 blocks to the end of Pond Street, and turn right onto Centre Street. Over the next 4 blocks you will pass the Post Office on the right, CVS on your left, a fire station on the left opposite the Dunkin Donuts on the right. Just after that you'll see a Chinese restaurant and convenience store on your right and the Monument at the center of the intersection. The church—a large stone building with a wrought-iron fence around it—is on the right. We use the side entrance about 200 feet up Eliot St., the side street at the convenience store. Eliot is one way the wrong way, so the best place way to find a parking spot is to pass the church and make a right on the next street, then loop back around.
FROM POINTS WEST, VIA ROUTE 90 AND ROUTE 9
Take Route 90 East (Mass Pike) to the Route 95/Route 128 intersection. Head south on Route 95 to the Route 9 East exit (Boston/Brookline). Travel east on Route 9 for a few miles. Make sure to stay more to the center lane. You'll pass the Chestnut Hill mall and movie theatre on your left. Continue down route 9 east into Brookline. Near the center of Brookline, a bunch of streets converge. About that time, you'll see a small cement overpass that is used as a walkway. Go under that. In the distance you'll see an old stone bridge. Go under that, and immediately on your right will be a Texaco Gas Station, and in front of you at the corner of the gas station is a traffic light. This is the corner of Huntington (which you are on) and South Huntington. Ahead of you and to your right are trolley tracks and overhead wiring. At this intersection, turn right onto South Huntington. About a mile or so up the road, you'll come to a traffic signal where the road becomes Centre Street. On your left is a 7-11 convenience store and on your right diagonal is a CVS. Follow the trolley tracks to the right about another mile thru the village of Jamaica Plain. You'll see a Dunkin Donuts on your right, and a fire station on the left. Just after this point is a blinking traffic signal where the trolley tracks bear to the left and you'll see a granite monument (on a traffic island) in front of you. This is the Corner of Centre & Eliot Streets. The church is right there on the right hand side, across the street from the monument. Park your car anywhere in that area, and walk up Eliot Street. The entrance to the church hall is on your left hand side about 200 feet up Eliot Street.
If street parking is challenging (due to the piles of snow or other reasons), you might try parking in the public (free!) lot behind Bukhara Restaurant at 701 Centre St.: drive two blocks north (towards Boston) from Eliot St. on Centre St., turn left on Burroughs St., take first left into parking lot. After parking walk straight on through the parking lot (back in direction of First Church); cross Thomas St to Hagar St.; continue on Hagar for its one block to Eliot – First Church will be in sight.
